Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Ashbaugh is a native Californian, whose family moved to Rancho Bernardo when he was in elementary school. His passion and connection with animals, and his desire to become a veterinarian, dates back to childhood. He left San Diego to pursue this dream, and is happy to be back in his hometown living and working and raising his family. Dr. Ashbaugh holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Genetics from The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the HELIX biological sciences honors society. He received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Ross University in 1996, and completed his clinical training at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Ashbaugh remained at the University of Minnesota for an additional year for his ECFVG certification, and then worked in private practice in the Twin Cities for over 4 years before returning home to San Diego. He enjoyed an association with numerous hospitals in San Diego through relief services over the past 10 years before becoming an associate at Carmel Mountain Ranch Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Ashbaugh enjoys all aspects of practicing veterinary medicine; his special areas of interest include dermatology, dentistry, and surgery. He is passionate about client education and preventive medicine. John and his wife, Monica, are the proud parents of four wonderful children Melina, Konrad, Sebastian, and Declan. They share their home with two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Archie and Grizzy, a cat names Seamus, and a myriad of tropical fish. John and his family love the outdoors hiking, tennis, biking, paddle boarding, and trips to the beach with the dogs. He enjoys his time at home, cooking and working in the garden. He and his sons are also passionate about hockey, and are often found at one of the local ice rinks.
