Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Colleen Helgen is originally from Greensboro, North Carolina. She attended Emory University in Atlanta, GA where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She left the south to attend veterinary school in the midwest at the University of Illinois in Champaign- Urbana. She graduated with her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2012 with high honors. While she loved growing up down south, she now considers the midwest her home and she is forever a Fighting Illini! While in veterinary school, she was active in numerous academic clubs and a member of the Phi Zeta Honor Society. Following veterinary school, Dr. Helgen practiced for 5 years in Springfield, IL, before becoming owner of Animal Medical Center of Litchfield in 2017. She appreciates all aspects of veterinary medicine, especially cardiology, surgery, internal medicine, and dentistry. She truly enjoys working with pet owners to improve and protect the health of their beloved family pets. Dr. Helgen recognizes the strength of the human-animal bond and the importance that it plays in the lives of so many people and their pets. Dr. Helgens husband, Eric, is a Litchfield-native who farms with his family. They have a daughter, Caroline, who constantly keeps them on their toes. They also have two yellow labs, Hank and Barley. In her free time, Dr. Helgen enjoys traveling south to visit family, spending time on the Outer Banks of NC beaches, cooking, and rooting for the Cardinals and the Illini.
