Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Butler is a 1977 graduate of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to his education at Purdue, Dr. Butler graduated from Reitz High School and the University of Southern Indiana. In his senior year at Purdue, Dr. Butler won the coveted award for "Highest Clinical Proficiency in Both Small and Large Animals." Upon graduation, Dr. Butler was enaged in Small Animal (primarily dog and cat) and Equine (horse) Veterinary Practice. His interest expanded to birds and exotic animals in 1981 and he became veterinarian for Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden in 1982 and retired from that position in February 2007. That interest in birds, reptiles, and exotic animals has further expanded to such pets owned privately in Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Dr. Butler is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA), and the Southwestern Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (SWIVMA) serving the latter group as secretary-treasurer, vice president, and president. He is a past associate member of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV). He was a shareholder and has served as secretary and staffing chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tri-State Veterinary Emergency Services, Inc., which started All Pet Emergency Clinic in Evansville. He is also a member of the Veterinary Information Network (VIN). Dr. Butler has also served in local Civitan and Kiwanis civic organizations, and is a life member of the Vanderburgh Humane Society and the Purdue Alumni Association. He served the City of Evansville as veterinarian for the Animal Control Shelter and on the Animal Control and Education Commission for twenty years from 1982 to 2002. Dr. Butler and his wife, Tammy, have a blended family that includes Nathan (and wife Jodie), Erin (and husband Jon), Mindy, Lindsey (and husband Brian), and Cassie, as well as three granddaughters, Alexis, Kaitlyn, and Marianne, and grandsons Ethan and Aiden. Dr. Butler is a member of the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus and both he and Tammy are proud past members of the Evansville Ecumenical Choir and are active members of the Tristate Tres Dias community and American Baptist East.
