Veterinarian Overview

Dr. Jarod Williams developed a love for animals from an early age, growing up surrounded by dogs in his family’s Connecticut home. His first word was even dog (technically it was “daw,” but his mother knew as he pointed out the window at neighborhood dogs). As a teenager, his menagerie grew to include birds, ferrets, several fish tanks, snakes, and a small dog sized monitor lizard affectionately named “The Punisher” who liked to sit on the couch and watch television with the family. After receiving his undergraduate degree in accounting, he realized that his professional passions lay elsewhere, and he moved to Virginia where he would eventually graduate with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia Tech University (Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine). Dr. Williams’ aspirations did not stop there. After veterinary school he completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at VCA Aurora in Chicago, starting a community based blood bank for pets in that region. He then completed residencies in both small animal internal medicine and emergency and critical care at VCA Veterinary Referral Associates in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Upon completing his residencies, he stayed on at VRA in a unique position within the soft tissue surgery department, spending over 10 years working in partnership with surgeon Dr. David Saylor. In this position, Dr. Williams managed all critical anesthesia cases, performed post-operative medical care of patients recovering from major surgeries, and trained in minimally invasive, endoscopic, and soft tissue surgeries. It was also during his time at VRA that he pursued training in acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). “My training at IVAS gave me such a different perspective, and allows me to view organs and diseases in relation to the body as a whole. This integrative medicine approach results in a more natural state of health, even when managing a multitude of complicated conditions.” Aside from clinical work, Dr. Williams has authored many peer reviewed journal articles, two book chapters, and lectures frequently on a variety of veterinary medicine topics. When not hard at work, Dr. Williams can usually be found spending time with his wife, Dr. Heather Williams, and their two children. Only second to his family is his love for mountain biking. Although Shreveport doesn’t boast quite the terrain as the Maryland-Virginia region he called home for so many years, Dr. Williams enjoys that he can comfortably ride outside year round! He has also been a lifelong swimmer, competing at the collegiate level and since as a masters swimmer. He currently swims with the Red River Masters at LSUS, and still enjoys competing in open water competitions. Our Cultur
