Our older dog was a beagle and was very overweight. When we switched from our old Vet to this one, they immediately asked all sorts of questions about his diet and exercise. Quickly they assessed that there was something wrong, and blood tests revealed a few days later that he had Hypo(low)thyroidism.
We started him on meds the next day, and he quickly lost weight and became much happier and healthier. In fact, within 1 year he had lost over 1/4 of his bod weight. He went from 41 to 30 pounds in about 10 months and it helped him immensely.
