Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Mike Maki lives on the farm his grandfather bought in New Ipswich in 1906. In his youth, the farm was a working dairy farm, although its been a while since cows have provided milk to the local markets. Currently, Mikes focus is to preserve open space and the farm for future generations of Makis (he has four grandchildren). Although Mike has been the primary surgeon at Wilton Animal Hospital since its inception, his interests are varied and range from raising llamas and beef cattle to providing all of the veterinary work for the Greenville Wildlife Park until it closed (yes, lions and tigers and bears, oh my!). Mike is an avid cyclist; he bikes to and from work as well as during lunch-time every possible day he can. On weekends, he is either working on the farm ably assisted by his orange cat, Tood; spending time in the sauna he built (stemming from his Finnish heritage); or cooking barbeque in his Big Green Egg for family and friends. His wife, Linda, worked at the hospital for many years and bred Maine Coon cats and Golden Retrievers in her spare time. Through the years, the Makis have rescued numerous cats and dogs; they currently have four cats, two of whom are special needs, and a dog who was adopted from a shelter in Tennessee. Many of these pets vacation with the Makis when they go camping in their RV. Although now retired from the variety of veterinary-related boards he served on for many years both at the regional and state level, Mike remains an active consultant whenever needed. He is also a volunteer for Court Appointed Special Advocates for children. For more information on CASA, visit www.casanh.org
