This 10,000-acre captive breeding facility for endangered species gave Dr. Ryan his first hands-on experience working with wildlife in 1999, and ultimately inspired him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Some of Dr. Ryans career highlights include capturing wild Hellbender salamanders for an Ohio Division of Wildlife population survey, immobilizing spotted hyenas in Kruger National Park, and performing physical examinations on western lowland gorillas at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium. Dr. Ryan is a passionate traveler and wildlife photographer who has explored over 20 national parks and private game reserves in Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, and Malawi. In addition to being an ardent wildlife conservationist, Dr. Ryan is also a seasoned outdoorsman. He through-hiked the 2200-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in 2009. His fellow hikers knew him by his trail name, Hellbender. In February 2016, Dr. Ryan also summited Africas highest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro. When hes not working with his favorite exotic species at Weare Animal Hospital, Dr. Ryan looks forward to exploring more of New Hampshires epic mountain ranges.
