Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Richard Yacowitz is one of the owners of Little Silver Animal Hospital. He purchased the hospital in 1986 as a one-doctor practice, and has expanded it over the years to become the larger, family oriented hospital we have today. Dr. Yacowitz was born in Ithaca, N.Y, and grew up in rural Ohio and Piscataway, N.J., when it was still a rural area. He completed his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University in 1971, and received his veterinary degree in 1976 from the University of Parma, Italy. He was a staff member at Raritan Animal Hospital in Edison from 1976-1985, and has been practicing here at Little Silver Animal Hospital ever since. In addition, Dr. Yacowitz is a certified veterinary acupuncturist and has been a member of the International Veterinary Society of Acupuncturists since 1996. He was a teaching assistant for the society in 2000. Dr. Yacowitz lives in Shrewsbury with his wife, Madeleine, who is an artist, as well as four dogs, BooBoo, Beanie, Birdie and Tater; two cats, NeeNee and FooFee; and numerous chickens that are the source of many eggs! He also has two grown children, Daniel, a chef, and Gena, an actress. In his spare time, Dr. Yacowitz enjoys fishing, traveling, gardening, diving and photography. You may have noticed the beautiful framed photos of African wildlife around the office, which were taken by Dr. Yacowitz on a medical mission trip to Uganda in 2011 and Botswana and South Africa in 2008. Despite his many varied interests, Dr. Yacowitz says his favorite activity is coming to work each day. He finds medicine fascinating, especially new innovations and alternative treatments.
