Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Katie Gibson was born and raised in New Jersey and then moved to North Carolina when she was in high school. Her parents were falconers so she spent her childhood training hawks and owls that her family had for falconry and rehabilitation. That probably helped to trigger her love for exotics. Growing up she had everything from snakes, frogs, lizards, birds, dogs, ferrets, fish, to sugar gliders as pets. She studied Biology at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and then graduated from the North Carolina College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. In vet school she took her education into her own hands and sought out additional educational opportunities that interested her. She honed her surgical skills by volunteering for spay/neuter clinics, she worked with the local animal shelter to treat sick and injured pets, she performed shell repairs and treated sick and injured turtles with the Turtle Rescue Team, she learned about fish medicine at Aquavet, and helped with research in the dermatology department. After vet school she did an internship at Carolina Veterinary Specialists where she continued to learn from veterinary specialists. This is where she fell in love with emergency medicine. Dr. Gibson practiced emergency medicine at the Regional Emergency Animal Care Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina for 8 years. She loved the challenge and excitement of helping critical patients but she missed the bond with her patients and clients that she had in general practice. She is happy to bring her emergency and exotics experience to Boca Park Animal Hospital where she feels like she can put all of her talents to use. When she is not working, you will find her rock climbing, salsa dancing, running, kayaking, and hiking with her chow mix, Gabby.
