Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Shelby L. Freda is a General Practitioner from Short Hills, New Jersey, who joined the medical staff of East Side Animal Hospital in August 2011. When asked about her early veterinary influences, Dr. Freda says she has been fascinated by animals as far back as she can remember. At one point, I brought home multiple stray cats from my neighborhood and hid them in our basement, hoping my parents wouldnt notice, but they did, or course, she says. Now that shes a veterinarian in Manhattan, Dr. Freda says she gains great satisfaction from improving the lives of people by caring for the pets that bring them so much unconditional love and loyalty. For her undergraduate studies, Dr. Freda attended the University of Michigan. During her time in college she started the Universitys pre-veterinary club. In 2003 she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. The following year she enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2008 with a Veterinary Medical Doctorate. Dr. Freda is a member of the New York City Veterinary Medical Association, the New York State Veterinary Medical Society, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. She is also USDA-accredited and certified to fill out international travel health certificates. Her professional interests include internal medicine and dermatology. She has been published in the veterinary reference text Canine and Feline Gastroenterology, providing her expertise for an article on GI neoplasia. Dr. Freda has a Tortie cat named Pinot that she found stuck in a tree while trying to escape a pack of raccoons. Outside her work at our Manhattan veterinary office, she enjoys biking, rollerblading, skiing, and golf.
