Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Laura Strom knew from childhood that her life would be spent working with animals. A horse lover from the start, her love for animals grew and led her to pursue veterinary medicine from the age of 12. Originally wanting to be in the wildlife field, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology at Washington State University in 1989 and immediately joined in the clean up efforts of the State of Alaska during the Exxon Valdez oil spill. After completing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at WSU in 1993 she decided to change her course and move to the beautiful Portland area to pursue the healing of companion animals. Being very holistic in her approach to medicine, Dr. Strom pursued her interests in dentistry, behavior, and gastrointestinal medicine knowing that the health of her animal patients was dependent on their home environment, diet, exercise, and emotional status in addition to the more obvious presenting symptoms. It was a seminar on alternative medicine, and years of watching the growth and development of what is now known as integrative medicine that finally spurred her to pursue formal training in acupuncture with the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society in 2011. With these methods and the time tested herbal therapies that Eastern medicine provides, she is excited to have additional tools in the toolbox toward healing her animal patients. Dr. Strom resides in the Beaverton area with her family, and when not seeing patients she can be found traveling, playing music, gardening, cooking new vegetarian meals, and keeping her beagle mix occupied and out of trouble.
