Veterinarian Overview
Ive known Dr. Rowlands for 20 years, and I can tell you she is one of the funniest, yet most tender-hearted human beings I know. Our team and community benefit greatly from her intellectual skills and passion for caring. Dr. Christie Cornelius, founder of Senior Paws & Last Wishes Dr. Jane Liz Rowlands, DVM joined Senior Paws/Last Wishes after nearly 15 years in general practice here in Houston, TX. Her desire to spend more time focusing on the unique needs of senior pets and their often-complicated medical cases brought her to Senior Paws & Last Wishes as our company expands to take a more active role in early palliative and hospice care in our community. Dr. Rowlands earned her undergraduate degree at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. She earned her veterinary degree at Texas A&M University. During her time in College Station, Dr. Rowlands worked with Dr. George Lees studying hereditary glomerulonephritis, a deadly kidney disease in dogs and humans. Her work with these research dogs led her to spearhead Aggie Dogs for Adoption. This volunteer program changed University protocol, allowing retired research dogs, from the kidney project and several others, to be adopted to the general public at the end of their service. This program resulted in hundreds of dogs going to loving homes. Dr. Rowlands interest in older pets led her in 2006, to serve as an investigator for the FDA drug trial for the now widely used drug, Felimazole. This drug helps treat hyperthyroidism, a frequent and potentially deadly disease common in older cats. Dr. Rowlands holds a Class I accreditation with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and APHIS. This certification allows Dr. Rowlands to approve animals for import from and export to other countries. Pets needing a health certificate for international travel can be assisted by Dr. Rowlands. Their exam, vaccines, any necessary blood testing and paperwork can be completed in the comfort of their own home. Dr. Rowlands has received special training in companion animal euthanasia practices and has been certified by the Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy (CAETA). She has taken an active role in helping address the pet overpopulation problem in Houston. She participates in trap, neuter, release (TNR) programs for feral cats and volunteers for low cost spay/neuter events. Dr. Rowlands has been interviewed for FOX and KHOU morning shows and Houston Public Affairs radio programs advocating the benefits of spaying and neutering pets. In addition, Dr. Rowlands volunteers with animal welfare organizations, including the Houston SPCA, after natural disasters. Dr. Rowlands and her family live in Cypress, with three cats. They are hoping to add a dog to the family soon. They feel enough time has finally elapsed since their beloved former dogs have passed, including their own retired research dog, Queen. Dr. Rowlands other interests include working in her vegetable garden, reading mystery novels and traveling.
