Long ago, 1972-1987, I had a ‘red’ cocker spaniel named Pearl. She developed a chronic fungal skin infection. First vet said it was hormone induced and that neutering her would cure her. Wrong. Second veterinarian shaved, SHAVED her entirely and then sold me a tiny, expensive tube of silver ointment with the consistency of axle grease, with instructions to rub the ointment into her skin. $100s worth of axle grease and a miserable dog. I took Pearl to Dr. Roy Brenton Smith. Dr. Smith examined Pearl and said, “The textbook example of this skin fungus is this dog, a red cocker spaniel.” He reached to a shelf behind the exam table and handed me a bottle of medicated shampoo ($8). “Bathe Pearl a couple times a week with this shampoo.” Two weeks later, skin fungus was gone, forever. Dr. Smith is a Veterinary God. I’ve sung his praises since.
