Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Hernan Montilla was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where a love of animal care was instilled in him early on in life. His passion hasnt wavered one bitnow, Dr. Montilla is proud to use his skills to serve the pets and animal owners of the area as a member of the Hobe Sound Veterinary Clinic family. Dr. Montilla earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Puerto Rico before attending veterinary school at Ross University. He completed a year of clinical studies at Texas A&M University, then took an externship at the Indianapolis Zoo, where he helped train dolphins to accept ultrasound exams. Next, Dr. Montilla worked with small animals, exotic pets, and even zoo animals in Massachusetts and Hawaii before completing a residency in theriogenologythe study of animal reproductionat Oregon State University, where he would ultimately remain on-staff as a professor in the schools Veterinary Teaching Hospital.Dr. Montilla is highly proficient in ultrasound, laparoscopic surgery, and endoscopy. He also brings to the clinic team specialized surgical and diagnostic skills for the treatment of ovarian and uterine conditions, mammary tumors, retained testicles, laparoscopic and ovary-sparing spays, stomach-tacking procedures in large dogs, and vasectomies. Under Dr. Montillas expert guidance, Hobe Sound Veterinary Clinic is proud to be the first to offer many of these procedures in the St. Lucie and Martin County areas.Dr. Montilla is a member of various professional organizations, including the Treasure Coast Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners. He has presented at the Oregon Veterinary Conference, the University of California-Davis Veterinary Symposium, and the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners International Camelid Health Conference. Dr. Montilla is proud to have had scientific studies published in major journals, including Emerging Infectious Diseases. Hes even a contributing author to several veterinary textbooks, such as Clinical Veterinary Advisor and Kirks Current Veterinary Therapy, which are used in universities all over the country and abroad.Every year, Dr. Montilla travels to Nicaragua with a team of veterinary students, where he volunteers necessary medical services for livestock and local pets. Along with his team, he distributes information to villagers about zoonotic disease and animal wellness, and even helps to have Nicaraguan dogs sponsored by Americans for their health and wellness needs. The fact that Dr. Montilla is bilingualhes fluent in both English and Spanishhelps greatly with his efforts.Outside of his interests in the world of veterinary medicine, Dr. Montilla enjoys water sports, sailing, visiting microbreweries, and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Lizwho works as a Certified Veterinary Technician herselfhave one pet of their own, a loveable dachshund named Camo.
