Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Micaela Shaughnessy, Locum Veterianrian, is a 1993 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. She spent three years in a mixed practice, both large animal and small, in a rural, central Pennsylvania. She was on call every third night for emergency duties -- many calf deliveries. For the next 3 years, Dr. Shaughnessy was a full time small animal associate in Maryland and Virginia, including a year in a dental referral practice in Baltimore. Dr. Shaughnessy is a former President of the Northern Virginia Veterinarian Medical Association and a member of the AVMA and the VVMA. Dr. Shaughnessy is also a member of Vet Partners and is actively involved in their Career Development Committee. Dr. Shaughnessy was a featured speaker at the NAVC in 2009 on Gender Economics. Her interview with Trends Magazine on Gender Issues appeared in the January 2009 issue. She was a contributing author to dvm magazine (see June 2009 issue on the Generational Divide) and was featured in the June issue of Veterinary Economics on alternative careers in the veterinary field. This spring, she was on a panel discussion for CVC- East on Emerging Issues in Veterinary Medicine This summer, Dr. Shaughnessy will be a featured presenter on Gender and Generational Issues for Vet Partners during the AVMA convention in Seattle.Dr. Shaughnessy is a single mother of two children, age 6 and 7. She has been working full time since she graduated with the exception of the seven weeks she took off after the birth of her first child and three weeks after the birth of her second child. Dr.Shaughnessy runs marathons. She runs 5K's with her family and she and her daughters are just starting to compete in parent/child, mini triathlons. Dr. Shaughnessy is fluent in German.
