Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Russell Tate, Sr., received a B.S. in Animal Industry from N.C. State College in 1958. He attended Lees McCrae College before serving in the U.S. Army artillery during the Korean conflict. He later received a B.S. in Agriculture from N.C. State College. Dr. Tate received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Oklahoma State University in 1961. He worked one summer at Belmont and other New York race tracks. Dr. Tate practiced in Glasgow Kentucky prior to opening a mixed animal practice (Maple Lawn Animal Clinic) in Vass, N.C., which also furnished housing facilities for the Moore County Humane Society for its first few years. During this time he also started a small animal practice in Sanford, N.C. and Raeford, N.C. Dr. Tate and Dr. Harrison went on to open companion animal practices in Southern Pines and West End, N.C. Dr. Tate is a life-time member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and long time member of the North Carolina Zoo. Semi-retired, Dr. Tate enjoys equestrian activities, delivering food for meals on wheels, performing surgery and has a avid interest in honey bee husbandry. He and his wife Anthea have three sons (Jule, Russ, Jr and John) and five grandchildren. Russ, Jr. is the Hospital Administrator for the three locations. They have two dogs; Lady and Jake mixed labs, 2 cats, honey bees and chickens. (retired)
