Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Shira Horenstein, from Phoenix, Arizona, has grown up with animals rather than siblings. She earned her undergraduate degree from Occidental College in biology with a marine biology emphasis. While at Occidental, she worked on their research vessel and taught students her love of the ocean. She went on to study veterinary medicine at Ross University in St. Kitts. She came back to the states to complete her veterinary degree at Texas A&M University.After graduating in 2004, she completed a veterinary internship at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Her research was published in the Biological Bulletin. After her internship, she married her college sweetheart and they moved to Maryland. After practicing small animal medicine for four years, she moved back to her hometown to practice in a corporate veterinary field. Since 2009, she has practiced veterinary medicine in the San Diego area.Her special interests include dermatology and internal medicine. She enjoys educating clients on all aspects of pet health and developing a bond with clients and their pets. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the San Diego County VMA. In her spare time, Dr. Horenstein trains and competes in performance agility with her Welsh Pembroke corgi Benji and nosework with her other corgi, Penny Lane. Dr. Horenstein and her husband share their home in Rancho Penasquitos with two cats as well, Tigger and Jude.
