Veterinarian Overview
Dr. Nikki Burk attended Iowa State University, then the University of Minnesota where she received a B.S. degree in Veterinary Science. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University Of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. As an undergraduate and as a veterinary student, Dr. Burk excelled academically. During her undergraduate years, she was involved in the honors program, was on the Deans List, and was part of Iowa States Presidential Leadership group. While in veterinary school, she was inducted into Phi Zeta Kappa (Veterinary Medical Honors Society) and received the World Animal Care Foundation Award.Dr. Burk is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Veterinary Dental Society, the American Association of Feline Practitioners, and the American Heartworm Society. Dr. Burk is a co-owner of South Hyland Pet Hospital. Dr. Burk maintains membership in the James O. Hansen Academy, by completion of at least five times the state requirement for continuing education to maintain her veterinary license. Her passion for learning has allowed her to develop professional interests in addition to canine and feline medicine and surgery, such as advanced pet dentistry, small exotic pet medicine, laser surgery and animal rehabilitation. She accepts dental referrals from other local veterinarians as well, and has assisted in teaching dentistry laboratories at the University of Minnesota for veterinary students. She enjoys mentoring and interacting with veterinary and pre-veterinary students. Dr. Burk serves on the committee for admission into veterinary school at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.Dr. Burk and her husband, Joe, and sons Izaak and Ethan share their home with two Chocolate Labradors named Zora and Zeus. Her hobbies include traveling and reading.
